History

Joe Hesse met TJ Carr in December, 2009, when workouts were held out of a single car garage rented at local apartment complex. Every Saturday they would meet outside and go through strongman workouts. TJ Carr, a Division III College Football Lineman, and already an amateur strongman competitor, had been training with a young man from Moline, Austin Acree, himself a football standout from Moline High School. Austin also happened to be a kidney transplant recipient. Austin competed in the 2010 Teen National Strongman Contest. As the weather warmed up they would often load up equipment and head out to Crow Creek park, where crowds would often gather, wondering what they were doing.

Later in 2010 they were joined by Dr. Sean Gallagher and Alex Longlett, and the group started to take shape. Dr. Gallagher is a former college hockey player and Alex is also a Highland games competitor. After a second winter in the garage they had started to accumulate more equipment and more strange looks from the apartment residents, so they worked with Ultimate Fitness in Bettendorf, building a small utility building on Ultimate property where they had more room to spread out. Ultimate Fitness has become a main sponsor for the group, allowing them to train on property and promoting the events the group was putting on.

As the group continued to grow in size and they continued to add more equipment they needed more room so in the fall of 2012 they obtained their own building and set up an indoor training facility, laid out with multiple stations to accommodate more people training different events at the same time. The group has continued to expand, and has hosted local athletes for strength training sessions. In November of 2015 they moved to their current location at 4427 State Street, going from 1200 square feet to over 4500 square feet. They opened the doors on Feburary 1, 2016 and have continued to grow with new members and continuously adding equipment. The group offers an annual scholarship for local high school athletes, works with at risk youth and veterans in the communities, holds fundraisers for various local charitable organizations and continues to host the annual Strength & Fitness Expo.
